Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc. is a social enterprise in which fabric that is discarded from interior design and garment industries are used to manufacture home goods for victims of domestic violence. Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc. additionally provides financial stability for domestic violence survivors by training and employing them to produce the home goods. At the time of developing her business, Sue Rock took advantage of the downturn of the garment industry as volumes of raw material became readily available for free. Simultaneously, Brooklyn and the Lower East Side began to sprout many women owned boutiques on the search for manufactured apparel, thus this was a perfect fit.
It’s now been 10 years in the making and we still haven’t scratched the surface of what we can do.
The social component of her business came later and in light of a domestic violence incident of a dear neighbor that till this day lingers with Rock, the jarring incident “struck a chord, it stayed, it resonated in my system” as Rock remarks. After some research Rock was disappointed to find no craft charity for women in the local areas, thus she took matters into her own hands. In training domestic violence survivors, Rock restores skills such as sewing, knitting, and crocheting, back into the neighborhood; as Rocks notes she is “integrating those skills into the culture of the community at a very high level.” In regards to the upcoming year for her business, Sue Rock will emphasize education and making allies that will bring her company forward “for the next 10 years.”
